Tips
- Don't rush! This is a marathon, not a race so take your time. Small consistent deeds are most pleasing to Allah (swt).
- Only the most common meaning is listed. Many words have others depending on context.
- The small gray note on a card (like "fem.") tells you which form it is.
Comprehension Estimator
There are approximately 77,430 total words in the Qur'an, but only ~1,000 unique core words make up over 85% of everything you read. Use the slider below to calculate how quickly you can unlock the Qur'an depending on how many words you learn each day!
Projected Milestones
How It Works
Because high-frequency vocabulary repeats so often throughout the Qur'an, progress isn't linear: it climbs rapidly at the beginning!
- First ~120 words: Covers function words like pronouns and prepositions (41.1% of the entire text).
- Next ~230 words: Adds essential thematic nouns like prophets, signs, and faith (brings you to 60%).
- Next ~600 words: Covers primary 3-letter verbs and derived forms (surpasses 85% coverage).
About
Words of Qur'an is 100% free and open source. There are no ads, accounts, or paywalls, and it will stay that way.
It's a practice tool for learning the most frequent words of the Qur'an. When I was studying Japanese, I used Tofugu's Kana Quiz to quiz myself on each letter. It was way more fun than just reading and taking notes, and I retained information much better. Later, I wanted to understand more of the Qur’an without always reading the translation. Then I found a pdf from understandquran.com, and thought it would be more fun to get instant feedback via a quiz so it would feel more like a game, and I figured other people might enjoy using it too.
About Me: I made this site in October 2026. For a while I'd been trying different ways to make money, and at some point I realized that although money is important, I should care more about earning Allah (swt)'s pleasure than about profit. That's why this site will remain 100% free: if it benefits even one other person, that's way better than any monetary value. I'm still in university and I’m working on other projects to earn money, so I trust that everything will all work out.
I developed this site as a Sadaqa Jaariya for my sister. May she receive the rewards if this ends up benefitting anyone, ameen.
Sources
Word lists, categories, and meanings come from 85% of Qur'anic Words by Dr. Abdulazeez Abdulraheem, published by Understand Al-Qur'an Academy. All rights to that material belong to the Academy, I just liked how it was categorized so I asked their permission to use it. Any mistakes are not on them; the document above was used as a reference. All the coding and rewriting was done by me.
